The appendix is a non-functional terminus organ of the digestive system, located at the juncture of the small and large intestines. It only become a medical concern when it becomes infected, which is called appendicitis, and must be removed surgically.

It is believed to be a vestigial organ of the human cecum that once served to digest cellulose from plant matter. It may also have served as a repository of "helpful" digestive bacteria.
