Keratination is the process by which keratin, a fibrous structural protein, is produced and accumulated in cells, primarily in the skin, hair, and nails. It provides strength, durability, and protection to these tissues. In the skin, keratin helps form a barrier against environmental damage, pathogens, and water loss. Abnormal keratinization can lead to various skin disorders.
