98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is the commonly accepted answer. It is also wrong.

The 98.6 degree figure was determined by a man named Paul August Wunderlicht in the mid 1800's using home made thermometers. He determined that the normal body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius which converts to 98.6 F (and leads to the first problem - there are only two digits of accuracy so it should be listed as 99 degrees after rounding to two digits) .

There have been very few studies of temperature in modern times but the ones that have been done suggest that the temperature really should be a range that varies depending on location taken, age, gender, time of day, stage of menstrual cycle and other factors.

98.6 is probably either frankly high or on the high end of normal with most people being lower most of the time.
