Emphysema is a chronic lung condition characterized by the destruction of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for gas exchange. This damage leads to reduced elasticity of the lungs, making it difficult to exhale air and resulting in shortness of breath. It is most commonly caused by long-term exposure to irritants such as tobacco smoke, air pollution, and occupational dust. Emphysema is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is often progressive, requiring management to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
