A physician performs a biopsy to obtain a small sample of tissue for diagnostic examination, which helps determine the presence or absence of disease, particularly cancer. This procedure can provide critical information about the nature of a lesion or abnormality, guiding treatment decisions. Additionally, biopsies can help assess the severity and stage of a disease, ensuring appropriate management.

A Bronchoscope is used by a physician to perform a bronchoscopy. This test involves passing the scope which has its own built in light source through the patients nose and on into the main bronchus and the if required the bronchioles. The physician can then examine these structures for abnormalities and take samples of tissue and fluid from the lungs via the biopsy channel of the bronchoscope.
There are a few other skin eruptions that mimic erythema nodosum, so the physician may have to perform a biopsy to sort them out. There are a few types of panniculitis, fat inflammation, that may signal a cancer somewhere.
To take a colon biopsy using biopsy forceps, the physician first inserts a colonoscope into the rectum and advances it through the colon to the area of interest. Once the targeted tissue is visualized, the biopsy forceps are deployed through the colonoscope. The forceps are then closed to grasp a small sample of the colon tissue and retracted into the scope. Finally, the biopsy sample is retrieved for pathological examination.
Nerve biopsies are performed in the more serious conditions. The biopsy will permit the physician to see the actual condition of the nerve and rule out other causes for the pain the patient experiences.
