Rebel soldiers occupying the town of Fredericksburg were a threat to the forces under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside. Burnside need to force the removal of Rebel troops there in order for the main force of his Army of the Potomac to cross the Rappahannock River. Burnside succeeded in neutralizing the town by using 150 pieces of artillery to force the Confederates out. On December 11, 1862, this action was successful.
What was a serious concern of General Lee concerning the defense of Fredericksburg in 1862?
General Lee did have a serious concern about Union General Burnside's intentions and the town of Fredericksburg. The town was near the naval supply base of Aquina Creek. Lee was troubled by the thought that the Army of the Potomac being transported to the south side of the James River, or perhaps worse, to North Carolina. With the so-called "fighting season" in Virginia moving into Winter, a creative and bold Burnside had the possibility of out foxing even the wise general Lee. Burnside, however, was not creative. Lee believed that with proper planning, Burnside could control 150,000 troops. On top of that threat, there were second line unseasoned troops in defense of Washington DC numbering perhaps 100,000. Burnside had, however, no intentions, other than keeping Lee at bay, perhaps even defeating the Army of Northern Virginia and then taking control of Richmond.
