The political system of proportional representation did not work, it meant that if you got 10% of the votes, you achieved 10% of the seats in the Reichstag, this was good for smaller parties but lead to lots of coalitions.

The Kaiser had fled and left the country with the huge reparations to pay.

The Sparkist revolt was an example of the political problems, a group of right-wing communist wanted to take over from the government and set out their own, with better working conditions. This was quelled by the Frei-Korps a group of ex-soldiers.

In the 1920s, politics in Germany could be summarized as: "chaotic".

There were over 30 political parties. Since no party was able to claim a majority in the Reichstag (parliament), it was difficult for the chancellor (prime minister) anything to get done. The President was forced to use emergency decrees just to get basic things done. Meanwhile, extremist parties- notably the far-left Communists and far-right Nazis- began fighting battles in the streets against each other.

After World War I ended, Germany was forced to pay heavy reparations to the victorious Allied Powers. With their country in tatters following the war and 1919 revolution, Germany struggled to pay them, and their economy suffered. However, reforms in the mid-1920s and help from other countries, especially the United States, slowly healed the German economy. In 1929, the US suffered a major Stock Market crash and then the Great Depression- and because Germany had received a lot of help and loans from the US, the German economy also crashed badly.

In the early 1930s, the Nazi Party was able to take advantage of the chaos and the economic problems to gain popularity, and by 1932, they were the largest party in the Reichstag- but not a majority. The Nazis allied themselves with other right-wing parties, and in January 1933 they were able to convince the President to appoint the Nazi Party leader, Adolf Hitler, to be chancellor and arrange for elections about a month later. The plan was for Hitler's coalition to win a majority in the Reichstag and actually get things done.

History would work out otherwise. Without getting too deep into it, Hitler was able to manipulate subsequent events to quickly have himself made into a dictator and have all political parties except his own Nazi Party outlawed. When the President died in August 1934, Hitler was officially the undisputed master of Germany. Nazism would dominate German politics until the end of World War II in 1945.
