At first they did not as the British invaded Washington DC and burned the White House. But the Americans did fight back and forced the British to sign a truce.

Answer #2
The War of 1812 was a draw, both British incursions into US territory and the American invasions of Canada were unable to gain any permanent territorial gains. In the end the final border were pretty much the same at the end as at the beginning.
One of America's most successful victories; the Battle of New Orleans, actually took place after the war was officially over; and played no part in the resolution of the war.

Why did Jackson's great victory at New Orlenes have no effect on the war of 1812?

The Battle of New Orleans had no effect on the War of 1812 because the War was already over, the Peace Treaty signed two weeks before the Battle was fought. In an age when news from Europe arrived by sailing ship, no one on either side knew that the Battle need not be fought and that the men who died in the Battle were dying pointless deaths for nothing. The Battle did confirm to the world that America could fight the British successfully, and made Jackson a national hero.

What were the two reasons US went to war with Great Britain?

In both of its wars against Great Britain (the War for Independence and the War of 1812), America took up arms mainly on behalf of its political integrity and to put a halt to abuses of its citizens by the royalist government of Great Britain. Fighting for respect as well as seeking to defend (and even expand) economic wealth were additional factors involved.
