In general terms, World War II did in fact change the expectations of many of the African-Americans who had gone abroad as soldiers or support-personnel. Having sacrificed their safety and comfort, having seen friends die, often having received wounds small and large, having performed with distinction on or near the battlefields of the war, having demonstrated intelligence and perseverance often outdoing that of White soldiers in battle, these valiant Black Americans returned home with an appropriate sense of pride, accomplishment, and dignity -- yet often with remarkable humility. Still, once back home, they could no longer merely accept being treated as second-rate or sub-human after having given their all to rescue overseas populations of the same prejudice.
