The poor guys in the Battle of the Bulge and in the Ardenne Forest had to literally make snow trenches and even sleep in them. Some of the soldiers even used fallen vehicles for trenches and safe protection. Without trenches hundreds of thousands of men would have died, even if some did die in the trenches, especially when they stood up.
