First discovered by Hippocrates, scurvy is caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. It is most often associated with sailors due to the inability to store citrus fruit for prolonged time. Scurvy has afflicted armies and was one of the major limitors to Marine warfare. Due to the poor food supply systems of the time, scurvy played a major role in WWI and many wars before it including the crusades and revolutionary war.
