The story of the Sitzkreig or rather the Phony war is strange. The Brits and French had delcared war on Germany yet they did nothing to help Poland who had their country invaded, even after the Brits and French said they would help them. It was a long period of inactivity until the period of September 1, 1939 to the beginning of May 1940 ended. The Germans chose to go into France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark and I think Luxembourg. This escalated the war from that point on. See link below I included for your interest.

What was phony about the Phoney War?

The Phoney War was an eight month period at the start of World War 2, during which there were no major military land operations on the Western Front. It began with the declaration of war by the western Allies (i.e. United Kingdom and France) against Nazi Germany on September 3, 1939, following the German invasion of Poland, and ended with the German attack on France and the Low Countries on May 10, 1940.It was phony because the Allies (i.e. United Kingdom and France) although they had declared war on Germany, were effectively doing nothing except apparently waiting for Germany to attackthem too. Perhaps they were expecting Germany to "destroy themselves" by attacking France's Maginot Line... and they would not actually have to fight this war they had given up so much to Germany as "bribes" to convince Germany not to begin the war.

What did germany do during the eight months of Sitzkrieg?

On the Western Front in the opening year of World War II, approximately eight months of "Phony War" (or, as the Germans called it, "sitzkrieg") passed before any serious fighting took place. In that time, the Germans were planning to invade but continually called off their plans due to weather or other complications. They were also raising new formations, training old formations, dropping leaflets on enemy positions, working out their strategy against other possible enemies, and all the while building up their strength for what they hoped would be a quick, decisive victory against France.
