Sabotage occurred behind all of the major fronts of World War II. For example, in France, in the months preceding D-Day (in June of 1944), French saboteurs blew up bridges and rail lines in the attempt to handicap German forces. On the Eastern front, especially from 1942 to 1944, sabotage by Soviet partisans included bridge- and railway-damage as well as carefully planned ambushes of German patrol units and construction or engineering crews.
John Brown seized the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry,Virginia in 1859. His attempt to incite armed revolt failed when a detachment of U.S. Marines commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Lee defeated Brown's plan and captured Brown. John Brown was tried by the State of Virginia for Treason. He was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.

Kharkov changed hand 4 times during WWII. It was initially captured by the Germans on October 24th, 1941. After a failed attempt to retake the city in may 1942 it was finally captured by the Red Army February 16th, 1943. It was retaken by the Germans exactly 1 month later on March 16th, 1943. It was finally liberated on August 23rd, 1943.
Farquhar was caught because he had unwittingly fallen into a trap set by Union soldiers. He was deceived by a false message promising a way to sabotage the Northern army, which led him to attempt to destroy the Owl Creek Bridge. However, this message was a ruse, and he was captured in the act of trying to carry out the sabotage.

The Confederate fleet was enlarged on April 17, 1861. Near Indianola, Texas, the Star of the West was captured. This was the vessel that had made an attempt to resupply Fort Sumter earlier in the the year.
In "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the rising action includes Peyton Farquhar's plan to sabotage the bridge and his attempt to escape after being caught by the Union soldiers. The falling action occurs as Peyton is captured, sentenced to death, and ultimately experiences an illusory escape in a moment of suspended time before his actual death by hanging.
In the story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce, the protagonist Peyton Farquhar is the only person who dies. He is hanged by Union soldiers for attempting to sabotage the bridge. However, the twist in the story reveals that his escape attempt was only a hallucination in the moments before his death.
