From the historian of the US Marine Band:"The Marine Band has never featured a harmonica player....Many years ago the Hohner Company had been naming their various different harmonica models after famous personalities. In 1896 they created a new harmonica and named it the Marine Band. They were apparently hoping to cash in on the fame and name recognition of the Marine Band to boost interest in their new instrument. It has been their most popular model since their founding in 1857."
Cold War - band - was created in 2002.
John Philip Souza didn't invent anything, but his father invented the fraudulent enlistment. When Souza was thirteen years old, his father got him enlisted in the Marine Corps so he wouldn't join a circus band. Boot Camp is bad enough when you're 18--can you imagine doing it at the age of 13?
They had a hit in 1972, Smoke gets in your eyes, a remake of the song made famous by the Platters in 1958. Their version was sort of a reggae version and is a great song. I remember having the 45 of it in 1972/73.
