It is no longer in use as a fighting weapon of war in the United States, but it commonly used for military ceromonies. The last war it was used in for fighting purposes by the United States was early in Vietnam.
It was designed in 1932 by John C. Garand. It started being used by U.S. Forces in 1936 and is still being used today for drilling use.

The Garand fires the 30-06 rifle cartridge, and the Carbine fires the .30Carbine personal defence (pistol) cartridge.
Many of the bolt action rifles held 5 cartridges, the M1 Garand held 8. Sub machine guns held larger numbers. And a "round" is one shot. Think you meant another term.
