Because the soviet union had blocked all traffic, electricity, and food to west Berlin hoping for them to surrender so that they would become a communist country. We airlifted supplies there so they wouldn't become communists, since we helped them they wanted to become democratic, just like us
Berlin blockade. The Soviets blockaded West Berlin to force it to become communist (it was democratic). The Berlin Airlift is when the US airlifted supplies to West Berlin. You know so they don't give in to communism.
Stalin and the USSR were concerned by the May 1946 election of anti-communists in Berlin and the Soviet occupation zone of Germany. In March 1948, the US extended the Marshall Plan to the Allied occupation zones, and the London 6-Power Conference prepared to establish a federal government there. Following the partition of Berlin, the entire Soviet zone was isolated as the communist puppet state called the German Democratic Republic (GDR or "East Germany"), shortly after the Berlin Airlift concluded in 1949.
He was mad about it but he didn't actually do anything until the British, French and US produced a new currency (the Deutchmark). He then felt that the countries were going against what was agreed at Potsdam so he blockaded all communications into West Berlin for Britain, France and the USA. The countries couldn't get any supplies into West Berlin so the people were starving. This began the Berlin Airlift.
Berlin Airlift
President Truman did this to prevent Stalin from taking over the city. Stalin blocked supplies to Berlin to force the US and British to abandon it.
When the US announced its decision to consolidate the zones they controlled in Berlin, Stalin reacted by blocking access to those zones. This was known as the Berlin Blockade. The US and Britain countered with the Berlin Airlift.
The Berlin Airlift
How the Soviet's react to the blockade
the American, British, and French zones of Germany were unified.
They did the Berlin airlift and flew in supplies to the city. My uncle was one of the pilots. They did this over a year.
Stalin imposed a blockade on Berlin for 11 months in an attempt to drive the Western Powers control out of West Berlin. As Berlin was in the Soviet bloc of Germany, he closed off all access to West Berlin so no resources could get through. this included food, coal for electricity etc.. The West Powers did not allow this to stop them and used the three air corridors, which they were still able to use, to supply West Berlin will all it needed. It was a massive airlift with planes flying into West Berlin constantly. After 11 months, Stalin saw that the Western Powers were not budging and ended the blockade. hope that helps!

By successful organizing and carrying out the famous Berlin air lift with which the city of Berlin was supplied forcing the Russian to give up the blockade after almost eleven month (June 24, 1948 - May 12, 1949)
allies, shortly after WWII Russia took over east Berlin and started the cold war with the us
Not anymore, and I can only remember a couple of them being there when we had troops in Berlin. We had tons of Army and Air Force officers, though.
