The major event of that year was the Compromise of 1850, whose main provisions were the admission of California as free soil and (in return for this concession by the South) the Fugitive Slave Act, which allowed for the employment of official slave-catchers.

The first one signalled that the South would now find it harder to bring in any new slave states. The second backfired badly, causing Harriet Beecher Stowe to write 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'.

Both of these raised the temperature of the debate and brought war nearer.
