The need for fire fighting knowledge and equipment arose as a consequence of the advancement of civilization. The concentration of people in areas where they built structures in which to live and work gave rise to accidents and fires. These fires destroyed things, and injured or killed people. There was a social need to have a way of attacking a blaze and extinguishing it to both protect people and limit damage. It's a "no brainer" now, but back then, back in those days before any organized fire fighting units were formed, it was a challenge. And it finally caught the attention of community leaders who applied some mind power to methods and methodology that could be employed to put out fires that occurred in their neighborhoods.
