he invited him for a meeting then ambushed him.
Hernán Cortés defeated Moctezuma II through a combination of military strategy, alliances with indigenous tribes, and the element of surprise. Cortés capitalized on existing rivalries among indigenous groups, securing support from tribes like the Tlaxcalans who opposed Aztec rule. Additionally, the use of superior weaponry and tactics, along with the psychological impact of his men’s horses and armor, played a crucial role in the conquest. Ultimately, the capture of Moctezuma and the subsequent siege of Tenochtitlán led to the fall of the Aztec Empire.

Because he was not a traitor, as was Moctezuma...this is why his name has "hero" status in Mex. City.

Dona Marina who translated for Cortez and told him about surrounding Indian tribes and how they wanted to get back at the Aztecs
The Aztecs ( or Mexicas) lived at Tenochtitlan. The Aztec's empire or civilization lasted 900 years. Until the Spaniard , Hernán Cortés conquered , or defeated the Aztec's empire all because the ruler of the time , Moctezuma II ( the second ) thought Hernan Cortes was a winged serpent god name Quetzalcoatl. There was a theory that Moctezuma II thought Hernan Cortes ( or the fake Quetzalcoatl) was coming back to get his land according to a story Moctezuma II had heard previously. So all of a sudden, Moctezuma II gives his land to Hernan Cortes because he thinks hes the winged god. Hernan Cortes leaves with his army and comes back with his army again. Destroying the whole empire under Moctezuma II 's (stupid) foolish mistake.Hope you liked my explanation. Thanks ! ! !
The Aztec chief Moctezuma II thought the Spanish leader, Hernan Cortes, was the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, who promised to return in 1519. Hernan took Moctezuma prisoner, and then the war began.
He was the last Aztec emperor before they were conquered by Hernan Cortes in 1521.
The king of the Aztecs when Hernán Cortés invaded Mexico was Moctezuma II. He ruled from 1502 until his capture and death in 1520 during the Spanish conquest. Moctezuma initially welcomed Cortés and his men, believing them to be divine entities, but this ultimately led to his downfall and the collapse of the Aztec Empire.
