America, provided Britain and the allies with much needed supplies before we actually entered the war. While the US provided much needed man power during the war it was proabably our Industrial manufacturing first and then manpower second that helped to win it.

The US had a tremendous industrial capacity and required only a few

imports. Ships and aircraft rolled off the lines and could sustain the allies

until US Military forces could be put in place. The outcome of WW-2 was

not just a couple of nuclear devices, it was the men, women, machines,

and commitment that put it all together.

Big. Big. Big. Not simply on the basis of Military Troops in the field as had been the case in WWI, but because of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, the US was fully united and committed to maximum agricultural and industrial production, but driving the technology effort against the Axis.

Aside from the cost of lives in the military, World War II also took its toll on those on the homefront. Women took over many jobs that had once been strickly for men. A lot of women went to work in factories to help produce war material. They became known as "Rosie the Riviter." The new employment opportunities would continue following the war. Many items were rationed, not because they were in short supply, but because the troops needed them in the Pacific and in Europe. Gas, for example, was rationed according to your need for it. The government gave you a sticker which you placed on the windshield of your car and it would determine how many gallons a week you were allowed to purchase. Many Americans suffered more than others. Japanese Americans were rounded up from the west coast and moved to "relocation" camps. There was a fear there might be spies among Japanese Americans. A large majority of Japanese Americans were loyal to the US and many served with honor during the war. Many food and other consumer items were also rationed. Americans also came to realize that we could no longer remain isolated from the affairs of the rest of the world. W W II allowed the U.S. to emerge as a super power, militarially and economically. It also led to the Cold War.
