They refused to surrender. Most of the fighting in WWI occured in France, devestating the cities and the countryside. But the French refused to give in. Led by Grand Marshall Foch, whose slogan was, "Attack! Attack! Attack!" the French held the Germans to a standstill multiple times until America decided to enter the war in 1917.
