After the defeat suffered by the BEF at Mons, in the battle of the French Frontier, on August 23, 1914, The field Marshal, sir John French led his army southward in the generle retreat of the Anglo-French Forces. They were in constant danger of being overlapped by the advancing German First Army of General von Kluck.

On august 26, the German caught up with the British II Corp at le Cateau which was separated by the Oise River from the I Corp. The Commenader of II corp had no other alternative but to stand and fight. That started the Battle of Le Cateau, which lasted about 11 hours and was ythe biggest battle fought by a British Army sincer Waterloo. The British managed to disengage after darkness fell, carrying on their retreat southward.
