Well envision this way if your loved ones were at war. Plus there was no communication between soldiers and family that and you had no idea whether they were alive or dead. For a really great example of this read Gone With the Windit has really great examples of what life was like for a woman with loved ones in the USA Civil War. Gone with the Wind by far best book I have ever read at the moment.
