Most death in the immediate area will be from the usual causes attributable to any kind of bomb:

  • Blast
  • Fire
  • Flying debris
  • Collapsing buildings
  • etc.

Due to the very high temperature of the burst, thermal flash burns up to fourth degree (involving all skin layers and even muscle tissue below the skin) and covering 50% of the body (the side facing the burst) can occur. As all burn treatment facilities in the area are likely destroyed most flash burn victims will die.

Additional deaths in the area and surrounding areas will be caused by radiation. It kills cells that are reproducing, causing sloughing of the intestinal lining resulting in uncontrollable diarrhea, slow wound healing, immune system suppression, etc.

In the very long term additional deaths from cancer will result in survivors.
