No one answer. It depended on what weapon the soldier was armed with, and the situation they were in. The rate of fire in many cases was less than today, since many weapons were bolt action rifles. However, some weapons, such as the MP 40, STEN or Thompson were fully automatic, with a higher rate of fire.
