The general who said, 'I shall return.' was Douglas MacArthur. He said it as he departed the Philippines early in World War II. He did indeed return to take the islands back from Japan a few years later.
MacArthur had "retired" after four years as Chief of Staff of the US Army in 1935 and taken a position as Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. The Philippines were still a US possession. MacArthur was recalled to active duty in July 1941 and named Commander United States Forces Far East (USFFE). After MacArthur escaped from the Philippines and reached Australia he was named Supreme Commander Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) in May 1942. Admiral Nimitz commanded the Central Pacific, and the SWPA was a theater carved out for MacArthur, in deference to his seniority. It would not have been done for anyone else.
Spain has never invaded the Philippines. Spain's interest in the Philippine Islands dates to their discovery by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. There was no grand invasion or conquest and coloniazation by Spain began in 1565 under Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Spain owned the Philppines until the Spanish-American War in 1898 when it became a US Territory.

Did you mean did he take a piano with him over staffers such as "nurses"? I have heard that that is so from my Grandpa Boos who was in Guam during WWII. MacArthur got no respect from my family. Gen. Wainwright was a real hero. Maybe my reply will get more input from other observers. I've been searching for some info on it, and haven't found much.

There is not a way to tell how long it will take get a green card to get back to the US. It all depends on the person background.
The Philippines was America's territory since the 1898 Spanish-American War. The first thing Japan did after Pearll Harbor was take over the Philippines. One of the greatest victories for America when MacArthur stepped on to the shore of one of the islands after reclaiming them.
