1877When the last federal troops were removed from the south.
Reconstruction began in 1865 with the ratification of the thirteenth Amendment. In 1867, all of the Reconstruction acts passed even with Johnson's veto. In 1877, the last federal troops leave the South and Rutherford B. Hayes is elected president.
The civil war was not called Reconstruction. Recontruction happened after the war was over and lasted until 1877 when the Union soldiers finally left the last states that were being reconstructed from the war.
In the West, the capture of Vicksburg, the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi. In the East (on the same day, by chance), the devastating Confederate defeat at Gettysburg, ending Lee's hopes of invading the North, and putting him out of action till the following spring. In Tennessee, the Army of the Cumberland came close to destruction at Chiockamauga, and was besieged in Chattanooga - saved from starvation by Grant, who was rapidly gaining enough credibility for the job of General-in-Chief, to which he would soon be appointed.
For the most part receptively, but still bitter at the brutal tactics employed by the Union and the mess that became reconstruction. Reconstruction was really a failed effort after the assassination of Lincoln. Though Andrew Johnson had a very conciliatory approach to reconstruction, but being a southerner himself he failed to gather the support of Congressional Republicans and many Democrats. The final result was a bureaucratic mess of reconstruction that left the south broke and technologically backward. Even though the ending of slavery was a just cause, the north still acted unnecessarily unforgiving toward the south and left the south without an economy. The real point is that southerners (then and now) resent northern states and politicians because of how poorly Reconstruction was carried out. In fact, its only been in the last 15 years that the automotive and aerospace industries have begun filling the economic void left by the forceful end of slave-driven agriculture. Southerners didn't respond well, but really because of the massive incompetence of northern politicians.

I'm not sure if there was ever an "official" reconstruction period. Generally, "Reconstruction" is applied to federal government policies applied to defeated Southern states as early as 1863. Historians generally agree that Reconstruction policies ended soon after the inauguration (following a razor-thin election) of Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877.
