Best Answer

4 years from 1861-1865. (4 years, 3 weeks and 6 days; last shot fired June 22, 1865.)

To explain the dates further, and what the spans of dates equal in years

Began: April 12, 1861

  • April 12th 1861 to April 12th 1862 = 1 year (NOTE: You are NOT counting ALL of the first year, because it began in mid-April.)
  • April 12th 1862 to April 12th 1863 = 2 years
  • April 12th 1863 to April 12th 1864 = 3 years
  • April 12th 1864 to May 9, 1865 (by proclamation) = 4 years, 3 weeks and 6 days
  • Last shot was fired June 22, 1865, but the war was declared over on May 9th.
