Guerrilla warfare causes LESS casualties because it is SMALL unit operations. It's also less expensive (cheaper); it can also "border" on "terrorism"...as the targets are often non-combatants (read women and children, churches, schools, and shopping malls). Amongst one of the first "exposures" to the word "terrorist" was when the VC blew up a restaurant in Saigon. Naturally that made the front pages in the US, and the word "terrorist" was used.

If the "Rebs" had stuck to guerrilla warfare; and not lost all their men (arms/ammunition) in those conventional battles...YEARS could've been added to the war.

What happended to the cofederate soilders at the end of the civil war?

A very lenient ruling. They were to hand in their weapons, sign the pledge never to take up arms against the USA, and go home quietly. If they did this (instead of conducting guerrilla warfare), they would be left alone - no hangings, jailings or other persecution.

How fast did civil war soldiers march?

It depends on which side union or confederacy. The union had it probably worse than the confederacy. The union would mostly sometimes meet the Confederacy on their territory that's how the Confederacy won part of their victories b knowing their territory around them. A average solider can walk up to 30-40 miles in a day!

What does the word guerrilla mean?

a person who engages in irregular warfare especially as a member of an independent unit carrying out harassment and sabotage Please use the correct form of the word "does". The definition of guerrilla is a member of a small group taking part in irregular fighting, typically against larger forces. Examples of guerrilla warfare would include the American Colonists fighting the British Redcoats in the Revolutionary War, the Confederates fighting the large Union army in the Civil war, or the Viet Kong fighting against the U.S.A. in the Vietnam war.

Why was a Southern guerrilla war not feasible for the Confederacy in the years of the US Civil War?

The existence of slavery in the South prevented any type of guerrilla war that would lead to Southern independence. Clearly the North would abolish slavery in all parts of the South that it conquered. This would end the white supremacy ideas of many Southerners. If there had been no slavery, then of course a guerrilla war may have caused the North to end losing lives by an never ending battle to find and defeat Southern guerrillas.

Was guerrilla warfare a possible strategy to prevent the Union from claiming a total victory over the Confederacy?

Just before General Lee's surrender at Appomattox, some Southern generals believed that the possibility for an extensive strategy of guerrilla warfare might be able to avoid a total defeat in the war. Confederate General E. Porter Alexander proposed that Lee's remaining troops retreat into the vast interior of the South. Leaders of the guerrilla forces would also return to their native states and work with the governors to bargain for the best possible surrender "deal".The guerrilla forces could and would convince the North to settle an agreeable cease fire with the South. General Alexander saw only a total Southern defeat if his plan was not at least tried.

What did military theorist Henri Jomini believe would make a defending nation not be forced to resort to guerrilla warfare?

To avoid having to resort to guerrilla warfare, Jomini advocated the addition of the regular army of national reserves such as militias. These forces would take the field with the regular army. These basically civilian forces could communicate to the regular population what part they should play in a war. The combined communications between the regular army, the militias and the civilians, would be adequate to avoid the defending nation to resort to what he called the "ugly" results of guerrilla warfare.
