Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Confederate spy during the American Civil War, adopted the name Harry T. Buford while disguised as a man. This persona allowed her to enlist in the Confederate Army and gather intelligence without revealing her true identity. The name was part of her elaborate efforts to navigate the male-dominated military environment and carry out her espionage activities effectively.

Many women were involved in the war in many ways. They were nurses, spies, fought next to men, tried to keep the farms and plantations working. Today we recongnize that there are single mothers, but in the civil war no one cared if there were or not. When the three days of battle in Gettysburg were over about 53,000 men died. This meant that all of the wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters who depended on these men were left without a income or household. Women couldn't own land, have bank accounts, get a higher education and were considered second class citizens. They couldn't vote. Many women had only one or two ways for supporting their children. They could be teachers, become prostitutes, take in laundry, remarry, or become a seamstress. Many many women followed the solders and the camps as nurses, cooks, and prostitues.

Cuban-born Loretta Velazquez, disguised as a man, enlisted in the Confederate army as Lieutenant Harry T. Buford in 1860, along with a company of volunteers from Arkansas that she had recruited. She fought in the battles of Bull Run, Ball’s Bluff, and Fort Donelson. In 1862 the army discharged her after discovering her disguise. Velazquez then enlisted with the 21st Louisiana Infantry regiment. According to her memoirs she fought at Shiloh alongside the men she had recruited in Arkansas. Velazquez's disguise was discovered yet again bringing her military career to an end. Left with no other recourse to help the Confederate cause, Loretta became a very successful spy for the South.
