There were approximately 3,500 men in the Einsatzgruppen or special action squads, which carried out the orders to annihilate Jews by machine gun fire, operating mostly in the eastern territories of occupied Poland. These men were helped by the Kiwis or volunteers from areas that were sympathetic to the Nazi Germans. The Einsatzgruppen killed nearly 1 million people by machine gun fire.
