The US Military breaks down its force as follows: Flag Officers or generals and admirals form the top echelon followed by Field Grade for colonels, lieutenant colonels and majors and their naval equivelant. Next is company grade for captains, lieutenants, warrant officers and ensigns followed by the enlisted ranks headed by the staff nco's and chiefs. NCO's and petty officers are next and at the lowest level are the bottom two pay grades, the seamen, PFC's and privates. That gives you six different groups or classes in the military structure.
