Because it was for the first time in history in the 20th century that the world became aware of itself, through the media, of what a place it was. People became aware of foreign lands in a big way, people became aware of news events throughout the world. Although the Internet has revolutionised this now I didn't have Internet access in the 20th century, but I was far more aware of my surroundings than my forebears had had. Given that the 20th century has the two greatest global conflicts WW1 &WW2 which affected millions & millions of people is obviously significant. I am sure there are other important factors....
