Throughout the 20th century, the United States was involved in several significant wars, including World War I (1917-1918), World War II (1941-1945), the Korean War (1950-1953), the Vietnam War (1955-1975), and the Gulf War (1990-1991). Additionally, the U.S. participated in numerous military interventions and conflicts during this period, such as those in Grenada (1983) and Panama (1989). Overall, the U.S. fought in at least five major wars, along with numerous smaller conflicts and operations.
The 20th Century is often referred to as the "Killing Century" due to the unprecedented scale of violence and conflict that characterized the era, including two World Wars, numerous genocides, and widespread civil wars. The century saw the deaths of millions from direct military action, as well as from state-sponsored atrocities such as the Holocaust and the Cambodian genocide. Additionally, the use of nuclear weapons and the Cold War's proxy conflicts further contributed to the massive loss of life. This combination of warfare, political repression, and ideological extremism marked the century as one of the deadliest in human history.

By the 20th century, Britain had gained control of South Africa following a series of conflicts and territorial gains, notably the Anglo-Zulu War and the Anglo-Boer Wars. The British established the Union of South Africa in 1910, uniting the Cape Colony, Natal, Transvaal, and the Orange Free State under a single government. This consolidation marked the beginning of a period of British dominion that would last until the mid-20th century.
