I count 19 presidents who were veterans of war-time military service.

Washington, Monroe, William H. Harrison, Jackson, Taylor, Pierce, Grant, Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Reagan all served in the Army during war time. Eisenhower was a 5-star general and was Supreme Commander of the allied forces in Europe during World War II. Reagan made training films and did not leave the country.

Washington and Monroe served in the Continental army , the others in the U.S. Army. Andrew Johnson was appointed military governor of Tennessee after it was re-captured by Union forces in the Civil War and held Army rank. Madison, Fillmore, Buchanan, Lincoln and Arthur served in various militias but not in a regular Army.

Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ford, Nixon and George H. W. Bush saw war-time service in the Navy. Jimmy Carter was a naval officer but only during peace time. George W. Bush was in the Air Force reserves.
