I count 19 presidents who were veterans of war-time military service.
Washington, Monroe, William H. Harrison, Jackson, Taylor, Pierce, Grant, Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Reagan all served in the Army during war time. Eisenhower was a 5-star general and was Supreme Commander of the allied forces in Europe during World War II. Reagan made training films and did not leave the country.
Washington and Monroe served in the Continental army , the others in the U.S. Army. Andrew Johnson was appointed military governor of Tennessee after it was re-captured by Union forces in the Civil War and held Army rank. Madison, Fillmore, Buchanan, Lincoln and Arthur served in various militias but not in a regular Army.
Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ford, Nixon and George H. W. Bush saw war-time service in the Navy. Jimmy Carter was a naval officer but only during peace time. George W. Bush was in the Air Force reserves.

There were about 200 million veterans alive after ww1.
As of 2023, it is estimated that fewer than 200,000 World War II veterans are still alive in the United States. The number is rapidly declining due to the advanced age of these veterans, many of whom are in their late 90s or older. The exact count varies as new data emerges and veterans pass away. Globally, the total number of surviving WWII veterans is also diminishing significantly.
The US Presidents who were Civil War veterans who saw combat action were Grant, Hayes, Garfield and McKinley. Andrew Johnson has military rank as the military governor of Tennessee and Arthur was a supply officer in a non-combat position. Fillmore had a sort of honorary position in the home guard.
There are currently 1,320 surviving veterans who fought during World War II. World War II was fought from 1939-1945. There are veterans from Germany, the United States, France, the UK, and Australia, the Philippines, and other countries.
