During the Battle of Midway, which took place from June 4 to June 7, 1942, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu. The United States lost one aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown, along with a destroyer, USS Hammann. This decisive battle significantly weakened the Japanese fleet and shifted the balance of naval power in the Pacific.

Coral Sea was the first time that aircraft carriers fought each other in a naval battle. Coral Sea was a tactical victory for the IJN and a strategic victory for the USN. The IJN sunk more ships but they aborted their mission. Midway was a decisive naval victory for the USN.
Over 248 aircraft carriers were part of the Japanese armada that came to fight at Midway Islands and all of them were sunk.
