There have been two wars defined as world wars. World War I (WWI) and was fought between August 1st 1914 and November 11th 1918. It was fought between the Great Powers and was fought in Europe and in the colonies of the Great Powers. It was called "The War to End All Wars". The war brought about new technology like airplanes, tanks, machine guns. Politically, it brought about the downfall of the Russian Empire and the rise of communism. It weakened all the major powers and set the stage for WWII. Germany ended up in hyperinflation, bringing social unrest and the rise of Hitler and fascism.

World War II (WWII) was fought between 1939 and 1945. The US officially entered the war in 1941 with the attack on Pearl Harbor June 7, 1941 by the Japanese Empire. War was declared by the US on Japan and then Germany and Italy then declared war on the US. The war was fought by the Axis (Japan, Germany, Italy) and the Allies (US, Britain, French, Russia). WWII saw the first and only use of atomic weapons.
