Easy, on how much ammunition they used, the answer is no one knows because the records were very poor in the factories back then but i can however answer the second question. They used what was called the mini ball and it was absolutely devastating and caused thousands more deaths and amputations than any other ammunition in its time, because of its more modern coned shape and the spiral etched barrel it would spin and go farther because the shape of it would cut through the air with a lot less drag than other bullet. Lead balls would splinter a bone and break it, the mini ball would shatter bones and the shrapnel would pierce other organs and get stuck there causing a catastrophic deadly effect.
