On the first day of the Blitz, September 7, 1940, around 430 people were killed in London due to German air raids. This marked the beginning of a sustained bombing campaign against the city, which would last for several months. The Blitz caused significant destruction and civilian casualties, profoundly impacting British morale and resilience during World War II.

Why did the blitz stop?

No single action could have stopped the Blitz (the bombing of London during WWII). Its effects were partially mitigated by anti-aircraft fire, helped by searchlights, by barrage balloons and by the RAF fighter aircraft. The citizens of London endured much pain and destruction; some mitigation was provided by individual bomb shelters and by communal shetlers including deep underground stations.

How Many African Americans Died In the Civil War?

When did the coventry Blitz start?

Coventry was part of Britains industrial centre of production, among, of course, many other places. The Luftwaffe was guided by the transmission of radio beams sent from 2 different locations, when the beams intersected the Bomber was over Coventry. At this time bomb aiming from an aeroplane was very haphazard indeed & the targetting of individual sites was very hit & miss (Mostly miss) & therefore civillians were attacked as much as military targets. Incendiary bombs were dropped to set fire to buildings, and once alight these fires attracted more of the same.

What effect did World War 1 have on the British Empire?

A simplistic answer: During WW2- The government gained more control over the economy than at any other time. Women went to work- often to munitions factories to support the war effort Food and clothing was rationed People were encouraged to grow their own food and 'make do and mend' clothes/household items Bombing (the blitz) reduced entire streets to rubble and killed thousands of civillians After WW2 Economically weak as it had to borrow so much from America The Blitz meant that many people were homeless and there weren't enough raw materials to rebuild as quickly as was needed. The British people were (mostly) put off war, thus voted for Labour. There were shortages of clothes, food and fuel. Soldiers could not go back into their original jobs because some women wanted to keep them. Like most wars, when soldiers returned there was a boom of marriages and babies
