After the fall of France in June 1940 it was obvious that Britain was next on the list of Hitlers conquests. The threat was very real. But the Royal Navy was huge at the time, to cross the English Channel Hitlers forces must secure air superiority, at the very least over the invasion beaches & the immediate bridgehead area. Churchill was very worried about the French fleet being absorbed by the German Navy. When Goerings' Luftwaffe were unable to win the Battle of Britain & turned to bombing British cities, largely at night, it became a much less potent threat. The threat was removed entirely in the summer of 1941 when Hitler moved east against Russia. The simple fact remains that Hitlers land forces were very, very powerful, but transporting them across the channel was an obstacle they had not the means to undertake: Had they landed in significant numbers in England in the autumn of 1940 then it is highly possible that London might have been occupied within, say, 2 weeks (Ok, I am being hypothetical here) but where the naval forces might have come from at the time is another question.
The allies were successful in the Battle of Britain.

In the beginning, Britain was basically fighting to defend itself all alone. There were Americans that joined the RAF, but as a country the USA did not join till much later in the war. Russia was fighting the Nazis too, but could hardly be said to be defending Britain, they were spending all their energies defending themselves. After the USA joined the war, they were the primary nation to defend Britain.

Great Britain
Yes in the sense that it defended itself and its allies, however it was not the aggressor that started the war, WW2 was started by Hitler/Germany invading Poland.
