Histories FIRST clash between aircraft carriers; airplanes did all of the fighting.
Another words: First naval battle in history fought strictly by airplanes (which also attacked warships).
Can be stated another way: First naval battle in history in which naval warships did NOT FIGHT EACH OTHER.
Coral Sea was history's first clash of carriers. Since the Japanese sunk America's largest carrier at the time, the USS Lexington and the destroyer Sims, and lost only a light carrier; the Japanese won a tactical victory at Coral Sea. But since the Japanese scuttled their plans for invasion in that region, and turned back; it was a strategical victory for the USN.
The two opposing fleets never caught sight of each other. In fact, they were never closer together than two hundred miles. All the attacking was done by aircraft. This was a radical departure. In all previous naval battles the fleets had to get close to the enemy to use their guns, or before there were guns, to ram one another, shoot arrows at each other, to try to board the enemy ships and kill them with swords.
It was fought in the air without the combatant seeing each other.
1st clash of aircraft carriers.
Battle of Coral; Battle of Long Tan; TET offensive; naval gun fire support from Australian Destroyers.
American Naval and Air forces participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. In both of the battles, the United States and Australian forces won over Japan (defeated Japan). With these two victories over Japan, the American Navy forces began to turn the tide in the war against Japan.
The only guns used at Midway were anti-aircraft guns and guns from torpedo bombers, dive bombers, and fighter planes. Midway, like the Battle of Coral Sea before it, were strictly "naval AIR battles."
The Battle of the Coral Sea was revolutionary. Coral Sea was the first naval clash of carriers, and the first naval battle in history in which all fighting (combat) was conducted by flying machines instead of warships.
It was the first naval battle fought exclusively with airplanes. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a tactical win for the Imperial Japanese Navy and a strategic win for the US Navy.

Battles that took place prior to 1941 were on mainland China. After 1941, the Pacific Ocean became a NAVAL battleground. US Marine Corps battles for islands were actually naval battles; as US Marines are "naval infantrymen." Some of the US Naval battles were: 1. Sea Battles around the islands of Guadalcanal; these naval fights were the most vicious naval engagements in naval history; especially the "Battle of Friday the 13th." 2. The Battle of the Java Sea; a cruiser fleet action. 3. The Battle of the Coral Sea. 4. The Battle of Midway. 5. The Battle of Leyte Gulf.
The biggest battle to take place was the battle of coral sea, between japan and the u.s.

The Battle of Coral Sea.
The most publicized are the Battles of Midway, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The Battle of Imphal in India stopped Japanese expansion towards the middle east. The Battle of the Coral Sea stopped Japanese expansion towards Australia. The Naval Battles around Guadalcanal were the most vicious sea battles in Naval History, and there were a half dozen of them fought around those islands.
One of the largest naval battles was the battle of Leyte Gulf. It was a battle that included a large fleet of naval vessels and also a large number of personnel were involved.
