In the period lading up to the US Cvil War, the North had an emerging industrial economy. The South remained a plantation based agricultural economy with much less industrial capability than the North.
The North flourished with an industrial economy that was augmented by farmlands in its western states. In the South, the economy was based almost 100% on agriculture. Cotton, rice and tobacco were valuable Southern crops. Prior to the US Civil War this amounted to a healthy economy poised to become a major one in the world.
