The first naval battle fought entirely by aircraft, and in which the opposing ships of each side never came within sight of each other, was the Battle of the Coral Sea in May, 1942, one month prior to the Battle of Midway.

There were two, one on October 10 and the second between November 28 and December 4,1870. The French lost the first battle. In the second battle, consisting of 3 major clashes, the French lost the first, won the second and finally lost the third. The generals in command during that campaign were general De la Motte-Rouge and later, general d'Aurelle de Paladines for France and Prince Frederick Nikolaus for Prussia. The battle commanders in the first Battle of Orléans were the generals Reyau and Von der Tann. In the second battle, several battle commanders were involved, such as Friedrich of Mecklenburg and the generals Alvensleben, Chanzy and Crouzat.

The loyalists troops were under the command of Major Patrick Ferguson, from Scotland. Ferguson was the only regular British soldier involved in the battle. The rebel forces were a collection of small units from South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee, each with their own commander.
There were no 'major warriors'. This was a battle of armies. Do you want commanders or what?The Athenian side was commanded by ten tribal generals who took command in turn for a day each. The overall commander was the polemarch Callimachus. On the day of the battle it was the turn of Miltiades to command.The Persian commander was the Mede Datis with his deputy the Persian Artaphernes.

The Union troops were led by U.S. Grant, with Divisional commanders that included Sherman, McClernand and both the Wallaces, one of them the author of Ben-Hur. General Don Carlos Buell arrived with reinforcements before dawn on the second day. The Confederates were led by Sidney Johnston (no relation to Joe Johnston), rated by many as the best General in the South. He was killed in this battle. His second-in-command was P.G.T. Beauregard, who took over.
