There are more advantages than disadvantages to an intervention. The intervening country/countries go at a time and place of their choosing, they come prepared, and they have an end-goal in mind. The disadvantage is that civil wars and natural disasters )the events that typically make an intervention necessary) can get worse than expected, thereby increasing the number of troops necessary and/or take longer to accomplish the mission at hand.

Several things can lead to military intervention. For example, when a country is attacked, one big option is to respond back with the military. When leaders of other countries are not treating their own citizens correctly, this can lead to military intervention from other countries.
