viet nam veteran with 100% disability
Vietnam war veterans are members of the military (of any country) who have served during the Vietnam war (1959-1975) -- while World War 2 veterans served during WWII (1939-1945). I have several family members who have served in both wars. You can learn about some of the symbols/conflicts/awards during both wars at SoldierCity. They have a large assortment of medals, patches, and flags for both wars. In fact, I just went to www.soldiercity.com to get a Vietnam flag for my grandfather (a Vietnam War veteran), and some World War 2 clothing w/Navy ships for his dad (one of our highly honored WWII veterans, who's alive and well to this day!)
It is a veteran who served in the US Military during the time of the Vietnam War without defining the role played within the war itself. It is not saying that they saw combat in Vietnam or that they were even in Asia. Very few who saw actual service in Vietnam would actually use that terminology, preferring something like I was at Dong Ha, or Khe Sahn or Danang. It does not however automatically mean that they did not serve in country.
1. The Vietnam War was the LAST war in which servicemen were issued a SERIAL NUMBER. Having your father's serial number would help your research; most US Servicemen from Vietnam will have TWO numbers-SSN & Serial #. Go by the SSN; but the serial number will assist you; Vietnam was a transitional period for the military. 2. Contact the VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America); this is vet organization, the same as the VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, etc. The VVA was founded by Viet War vets; the VFW was founded by Spanish-American War vets in 1899; the Legion was founded by WW1 vets in 1919; and the AMVETS were founded by WW2 vets in 1944. 3. Each Unit (Division, Regiment, Squadron, Battalion) normally has a website. When you find out which UNIT your father was in, go to that site.
Most people know if they did or did not serve in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos from 1945 to 1975. Everyone who's a Vietnam Vet knows who they are.
