During World War I, the United States was led by President Woodrow Wilson. The Zimmerman Telegram, which was a secret diplomatic communication from Germany proposing a military alliance with Mexico against the U.S., was intercepted and revealed to the American public in early 1917. This, along with other factors, contributed to the U.S. decision to enter the war in April 1917. Wilson's administration used the telegram to galvanize public support for joining the Allied Powers.
