The beaches of Normandy and the farmlands of Normandy and Brittany were the parts of France on D-Day. Many American parachutists landed in the swampy bocage fields south of Cherbourg, far from Omaha Beach which they were supposed to protect.
D-Day took place on the beaches and fields of northern Normandy in France. This area was chosen as it is about 200 km south of where the German generals expected the invasion.
My explanation (not being British!) is that the fields of France (where the deadliest battles on the western front took place) were covered in poppies at the end of the war.
the reason Veterans use poppies as their symbol is because when they were fighting the first and Second world war, they were surrounded by fields of poppies (red) so much blood and so much death amids all this beauty, so a man named John Mac Rae ( a Canadian) wrote a beautiful poem called " In Flanders Fields" well worth the read you will probably find the words in his Bio on google.
Flanders is in Belgium.
