The war was won by Parliament, but after the death of Oliver Cromwell in 1658 dissent led to disorder and the monarchy was restored in 1660. For eleven years, from 1649-60 England was a republic.
Fought between 1642 to 1651, the English Civil War pitted the Royalists against the Parliamentarians. The result of the war was a victory for the Parliamentarians, and King Charles I's execution.

The English Civil War was actually a series of three related wars that took place between 1642 and 1651. The two sides in this war were the Royalists (supporters of the king and the monarchy) and the Parliamentarians (who wanted to take power away from the king).

Specifically, the first Civil War (1642-1646) was between supporters of King Charles I and the supporters of the Long Parliament; the second Civil War (1648-1649) was also between those two groups. The third Civil War (1649-1651) was between supporters of King Charles II and the Rump Parliament. The most famous figure on the Parlimentarian side was Oliver Cromwell.

The English Civil War was fought between the Royalists, led by the King Charles 1st, and the Parliamentarians led by Oliver Cromwell.

The Parliamentarians were opposed to absolute rule by the Monarch and to the idea of 'the Divine Right of Kings', whereby the sovereign seriously believed that they had been specially appointed by God to lead the nation. They wanted Parliamentary members to be elected by the people as opposed to being appointed by the Court, to have far greater control over governing the nation, and an ultimate veto over the King's decisions. They also considered that the morals and social conditions of England had grown corrupt and decadent, with the Church having too much money and neglecting it's duties to the poor and needy, and that there was simply too much rotten behaviour at Government level- bribery, nepotism, fraud, and so on. Most Parliamentarians were Protestants, a good many of these being of the Puritan variety, although there were some moderate Catholics of their side too.

The Royalists were in favour of the 'status quo'- they fervently believed in the absolute power of the King, who they saw as a father figure to the nation, and whilst acknowledging that things at the top of Government weren't perfect, thought that the existing system was the best one in the interests of the country. They did not believe that common men were capable of electing Members of Parliament to work in their best interests, and that ordinary people needed to be guided and have decisions made for them, as they were not up to making them themselves. It was basically a paternalistic approach. Many Royalists were Catholics, although they numbered some protestants in their ranks as well.
