Tradition in the south had become reversed. A period of reconstruction; wealthy plantation owners were bankrupt, slaves were no longer private property, but now equal to the whites. Carpetbaggers, to include former slaves, (so called because they carried their belongings in a carpet) came from the north to take advantage (personal gain) of southern poverty. Un-officially, northerners were punishing southerners for being traitors to the United States government.

A large segment of southeners packed up and moved westward; they became part of the western frontier, and helped to settle what would become the western portion of the United States.
