One of the Civil War's causes is the fact that there are many sides that both wanted the country to develop by its design (Eg: the Northerners wanted the central bank to exist while the Southerners opposed it ). And about slavery, the Southerners wanted many slave states to increase the slave number so that their kind of economic which based much on labor force will be promoted while the Northers just wanted to develop the middle class to trade together so therfore rising their industrialized economic.

Did the republicans platform in 1860 promised to end slavery in southern states?

The platform was based, in part, on the promise of ending slavery. The politics of 1860 were explosive and the election of the first Republican president pushed the divide between the North and South leading to the Civil War. Since then, the Republicans have done more for civil rights than the Democrats, believe it or not. Do some research, especially on Eisenhower and Nixon.

Before the Civil War why was slavery more important to the South than it was to the North?

Slavery was more important to the South than it was to the North, because the South's economy relied on agriculture.
